Thai Tea
Also known as Cha Yen, Thai Iced Tea, Cha Thai
Thailand's best-known tea drink: strongly brewed black tea, sweetened with sugar and condensed milk and served over ice. Cold, it is called cha yen. In Thailand it is usually made without spices; recipes abroad often add star anise or cardamom.
Taste
Strong, sweet and creamy, served ice cold
How to brew
Brew black tea strong. Sweeten it with sugar and condensed milk, pour it over ice and top with evaporated or whole milk.
Cultural background
ChaTraMue, the brand that made the drink known abroad, began as a Chinese tea shop on Yaowarat Road in Bangkok, opened in 1925 by a family from Chaozhou. Hot tea never caught on in the heat, so the shop began importing red (black) tea for iced Thai milk tea. The company dates its brand to 1945.
