Cultural background
Bubble tea began in Taiwan in the 1980s. Two tea houses claim to have invented it: Hanlin Tea Room in Tainan (1986) and Chun Shui Tang in Taichung (1987). They took each other to court; in 2019 a court ruled that the drink could not be patented. From the 1990s it spread across Asia and the world.
