Assam
Also known as Assam Tea
Black tea from the lowlands of the Brahmaputra valley, made from the native Assam tea plant (Camellia sinensis var. assamica). Assam is the world's largest tea-growing region by production. Its tea is known for body, briskness, a malty flavour and a strong colour, and it is the base of many breakfast teas.

Cultural background
The Singpho people of Assam knew and used the plant long before the British arrived. In 1823 the Scottish trader Robert Bruce came across it, reportedly pointed to it by the nobleman Maniram Dewan; the first eight chests of Assam tea were auctioned in London in January 1839. Today more tea is made from Assam-type plants than from the China type.
